What Is Open Enrollment for 2027 Coverage?

Open Enrollment is the yearly window when you can enroll in, renew, or change an ACA Marketplace health insurance plan for the coming year. The Open Enrollment Period that begins in fall 2026 is for coverage during the 2027 plan year.

It is also the best time for existing enrollees to review their coverage. Premiums, provider networks, prescription formularies, and the amount of financial help you qualify for can change from one year to the next.

Key 2027 Open Enrollment Dates — and Why They Vary by State

November 1, 2026 is the first day you can apply for 2027 Marketplace coverage or update an existing application.

The closing date is less simple. Most states use the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, while others run their own state-based Marketplace and may set different deadlines — including different cut-off dates for coverage that starts January 1. Federal guidance on the 2027 closing date has also changed, so we do not list a single nationwide deadline here.

Who Can Enroll in a Marketplace Plan

In general, to buy a plan through the Marketplace you must live in the state or service area you're applying in, be a U.S. citizen or have an eligible immigration status, and not be incarcerated. Additional rules apply to financial help, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Eligibility rules are set by federal and state law and can change. Your Marketplace application determines your final eligibility.

Financial Help: Premium Tax Credits and Cost-Sharing Reductions

Premium tax credits may lower your monthly premium if you're eligible, based on factors such as household income, household size, and other Marketplace rules. Cost-sharing reductions may lower deductibles, copays, and coinsurance for eligible enrollees who choose a Silver plan. Learn more in our metal tiers guide.

Special Enrollment Periods After Open Enrollment

After Open Enrollment ends, you can generally enroll in or change Marketplace coverage only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Common qualifying life events include losing job-based coverage, moving, getting married, having or adopting a child, and turning 26. Most Special Enrollment Periods last a limited time after the event.

Read our Special Enrollment Periods guide or use the Special Enrollment checker to see whether a recent change might qualify.

ACA Marketplace Plans vs. Medically Underwritten Private Plans

Some people also compare private PPO health insurance and other off-Marketplace options. These are different products with different rules.

2027 Open Enrollment for Individuals

If you buy your own coverage, compare the total cost — premium plus deductible and out-of-pocket maximum — not just the monthly price. Confirm that your doctors and prescriptions are covered. See individual & family health insurance for more help.

2027 Open Enrollment for Families

Families should check that every member's doctors, pediatric care, and prescriptions are in-network, and review how family deductibles and out-of-pocket limits work. Some children may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Our family health insurance guide walks through the details.

2027 Open Enrollment for Self-Employed Professionals

If you're self-employed or a 1099 contractor, your Marketplace application asks for your expected 2027 income, which can be harder to estimate. Update it during the year if your income changes. Compare Marketplace and private options on our self-employed health insurance page.

2027 Open Enrollment for Small-Business Owners

Small-business owners may consider a group health plan, or an arrangement that reimburses employees for individual coverage (such as an ICHRA or QSEHRA), depending on eligibility and business needs. These options have their own rules and timelines. Start with our small business health insurance page.

Your 2027 Open Enrollment Checklist

  • Find your state's Marketplace and confirm its 2027 Open Enrollment deadlines.
  • Estimate your household's expected 2027 income and household size.
  • Gather Social Security numbers (or immigration documents) and any job-based coverage information.
  • List your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions — then check each plan's network and drug list.
  • If you're already enrolled, review your renewal notice for changes to premiums, networks, and benefits.
  • Compare total yearly costs, not just premiums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open Enrollment for 2027 ACA Marketplace coverage opens November 1, 2026. Closing dates and the deadline for coverage starting January 1 can differ between HealthCare.gov and state-run Marketplaces, so confirm the dates for your state on HealthCare.gov or your state's Marketplace website.

Not necessarily. States that use HealthCare.gov follow the federal schedule, while states that run their own Marketplace may set different deadlines. Always confirm the deadline with the Marketplace that serves your state.

Many Marketplace enrollees may be automatically re-enrolled if they take no action, but your plan, premium, network, and financial help can change from year to year. Reviewing your coverage and updating your application during Open Enrollment helps you avoid surprises.

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby, usually for a limited time. Some private or short-term options accept applications year-round, subject to state availability, eligibility, and underwriting. These options may not provide the same benefits or consumer protections as ACA-compliant coverage.

Not necessarily. Private health insurance can include ACA-compliant plans sold outside the Marketplace as well as non-ACA options such as short-term, fixed-indemnity, or medically underwritten coverage. Benefits, exclusions, pre-existing-condition rules, and financial protections vary by product.

It depends on whether your doctor participates in the network of the specific plan you choose for 2027. Networks can change between plan years, so check your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions before you enroll.

There is generally no additional fee for the enrollment guidance I provide for plans available through me. If you enroll, I may be compensated by the insurance carrier. Compensation and plan availability vary, and I'll explain the options available for your situation.
